Active Treatment
Brackets and wires are fitted, or your aligner series begins. Adjustment visits every few weeks keep the movement on plan — those appointments are short, and missing them is what stretches treatment out.
Retain the Result
Once the teeth are where they should be the appliance comes off and retainers go in the same day. This is the part people underestimate: teeth move back, and a retainer is what makes the result permanent.
Caring for Braces and Aligners
Cleaning matters more during orthodontic treatment than at any other time, because brackets and trays both hold plaque against the enamel:
- Brush after every meal with braces, and use an interdental brush around each bracket
- Avoid hard and sticky food — ice, nuts, toffee and crusty bread break brackets
- With aligners, wear them 20 to 22 hours a day and only drink water while they are in
- Rinse aligners each time you take them out; never clean them with hot water
- Keep your six-month cleanings throughout treatment, not just after it
- Wear the retainer exactly as instructed once treatment finishes

No. Bone remodels throughout life, which is why adult orthodontics works perfectly well — a large share of orthodontic patients are now adults. Treatment can take a little longer than in a teenager, and gum health is assessed first, but age itself is not a barrier.
It depends on the movement needed. Fixed braces handle rotations, significant root movement and complex bite correction that aligners struggle with, and they work whether or not you remember them. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and removable, but only work if worn 20 to 22 hours a day. The scan and the plan decide it, not preference alone.
Most cases run somewhere between several months and a couple of years. A mild front-tooth correction is at the short end; a full bite correction at the long end. Missed adjustment appointments and aligners not worn for the full daily hours are the two things that stretch treatment out.
There is no pain during fitting. For a few days after braces are placed or a new aligner is started, the teeth feel tender when you bite — that is the bone remodeling, and it is the sign it is working. Ordinary pain relief and softer food for a day or two is all most people need.
