First Aid That Changes the Outcome
What you do in the first few minutes genuinely affects whether a tooth can be saved. In order of how much it matters:
- Knocked-out tooth: pick it up by the crown, never the root. Rinse gently in milk or saline, try to reseat it in the socket, otherwise store it in milk or your own saliva — never water
- Cracked or broken tooth: rinse with warm water, hold a cold compress to the cheek, and bring any pieces you can find
- Severe toothache: rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to clear debris. Take over-the-counter pain relief — never hold aspirin against the gum
- Lost crown or filling: bring it with you, it can often be re-cemented. Dental wax or sugar-free gum will cover the exposed tooth meanwhile
- Swelling: cold compress on the outside of the cheek only. Never apply heat to a swollen face — it helps the infection spread
- Bleeding: firm pressure with clean gauze for 10 to 15 minutes. If it has not slowed, call us straight away
