Why Dentures Stop Fitting
A denture rests on a ridge of bone covered by gum. Once the teeth are gone that bone has nothing loading it, so it slowly resorbs — quickly in the first year after extractions, then steadily for the rest of your life.

Your Reline, Step by Step
A soft reline can often be done while you wait. A hard reline usually means leaving the denture with us for the day.
Check the Tissue
We examine the gum under the denture first. Inflamed or overgrown tissue has to settle before an impression is taken, or the reline captures a distorted shape and the problem repeats.
Impression in the Denture
An impression material is placed inside the denture and you bite into it, so the new surface records your ridge with the denture seated exactly as it sits in function.
Process & Fit
The new surface is processed — chairside for a soft reline, in the laboratory for a hard one — then fitted, the bite checked and any pressure points relieved before you leave.
After a Reline
The denture will feel tighter, which is the point. A few days of adjustment is normal:
- Expect a firmer fit and possibly a new pressure spot in the first days
- Come back for adjustment rather than filing it yourself — that ruins the surface
- Clean daily with a soft brush and denture cleaner, never toothpaste
- Leave it out overnight so the tissue underneath can recover
- Soft reline material needs gentler cleaning — we will show you
- Expect to need another reline in a few years; the ridge keeps changing
