What Orthodontic Treatment Actually Does

Orthodontics moves teeth through bone. Steady, gentle pressure remodels the bone ahead of and behind each root, and the tooth travels to where the plan puts it. That is why it takes months rather than weeks, and why the retainer afterwards is not optional.

Crowded, gapped or protruding teeth are harder to clean, which means more decay and more gum disease over a lifetime. A bite that meets unevenly wears some teeth faster than others and can load the jaw joint badly. Straightening is a health treatment that happens to be cosmetic too.

Age is mostly irrelevant. Bone remodels throughout life, which is why adult braces work perfectly well. What changes with age is speed and the occasional need to treat gum health first.

What Orthodontics Can Correct

Some of these are obvious in the mirror and some only show on an X-ray. An assessment sorts what needs treating from what merely looks untidy.

Simple, Honest Pricing

What an Orthodontist Costs in Torrance

Orthodontic cost is driven by how far the teeth have to move and how many months you are in treatment — not by which appliance you pick.

Priced by complexity, not by brand

A mild front-tooth correction costs less than a full bite correction, whichever appliance is used. The scan and the plan produce your figure.

Orthodontic insurance benefits

Many plans carry a separate lifetime orthodontic benefit. We verify yours before treatment and tell you exactly what it will contribute.

Monthly payment plans

Orthodontics is paid over the course of treatment rather than up front. CareCredit and in-practice plans are available — see Invisalign cost for our published aligner figures.

Know Your Options

Metal Braces vs Clear Aligners vs Retainers

The appliance is chosen by the movement required, not by preference alone. Here is what each is genuinely good at.

Clear aligners

Removable trays changed on a schedule.

Retainers

The Process

Your Orthodontic Treatment, Stage by Stage

Nothing irreversible happens before you have seen the plan, the timeline and the cost.

01

Assess & Plan

Photographs, X-rays and a digital scan show where the teeth sit and where the bite fails. From that we map the movements needed, which decides whether braces or aligners will do the job.

02

Active Treatment

Brackets and wires are fitted, or your aligner series begins. Adjustment visits every few weeks keep the movement on plan — those appointments are short, and missing them is what stretches treatment out.

03

Retain the Result

Once the teeth are where they should be the appliance comes off and retainers go in the same day. This is the part people underestimate: teeth move back, and a retainer is what makes the result permanent.

Living With It

Caring for Braces and Aligners

Cleaning matters more during orthodontic treatment than at any other time, because brackets and trays both hold plaque against the enamel:

White marks around where brackets were are decalcification — early decay from plaque left sitting. They are permanent, and they are entirely preventable with the routine above.

FAQ

Orthodontic Questions, Answered

Cost is driven by how far the teeth have to move and how many months treatment runs, rather than by which appliance you choose. Many insurance plans carry a separate lifetime orthodontic benefit, which we verify before you commit. Our clear-aligner figures are published in full on the Invisalign cost page.

No. Bone remodels throughout life, which is why adult orthodontics works perfectly well — a large share of orthodontic patients are now adults. Treatment can take a little longer than in a teenager, and gum health is assessed first, but age itself is not a barrier.

It depends on the movement needed. Fixed braces handle rotations, significant root movement and complex bite correction that aligners struggle with, and they work whether or not you remember them. Clear aligners are nearly invisible and removable, but only work if worn 20 to 22 hours a day. The scan and the plan decide it, not preference alone.

Most cases run somewhere between several months and a couple of years. A mild front-tooth correction is at the short end; a full bite correction at the long end. Missed adjustment appointments and aligners not worn for the full daily hours are the two things that stretch treatment out.

There is no pain during fitting. For a few days after braces are placed or a new aligner is started, the teeth feel tender when you bite — that is the bone remodeling, and it is the sign it is working. Ordinary pain relief and softer food for a day or two is all most people need.

In some form, yes. Teeth drift for life, and the strongest predictor of a relapsed smile is a retainer that stopped being worn. Most people move to nights only after the first year. A fixed wire behind the front teeth is another option — see retainer instructions.

Around age seven is the usual guidance, because the first adult molars and incisors are through by then and crowding or bite problems become visible. That first visit usually results in monitoring rather than treatment — starting early for its own sake helps nobody.

Usually yes, with planning. Brackets bond differently to porcelain than to enamel, and aligners move crowned teeth perfectly well. What matters is sequencing: if you are planning veneers, straighten first so the veneers can be thinner and less enamel is removed.
